British-Chinese people fear they will be ‘scarred for more than a generation’ after receiving racist abuse during the coronavirus pandemic, an expert has warned.
Author and business psychologist Binna Kandola conducted 30 in-depth interviews with people of east-Asian heritage from the UK and heard reports of people being sworn at, told to “go back to China” and having their face coverings grabbed by strangers.
Prof Kandola said people have become isolated and withdrawn from society after experiencing a rising tide of abuse, and it will take a long time for many to feel “completely safe” again.
