TV news anchor Naga Munchetty received a reprimand from the BBC for asserting that Donald Trump’s remarks, in which he told women of color to “go home,” were “embedded in racism.”
Despite her disclaimer, “I’m not accusing anybody of something right here,” Munchetty was found to have violated editorial guidelines. The BBC’s rationale was that its journalists should not openly display their opinions on matters of public policy.
This is far from the first instance where individuals facing racism have encountered backlash for speaking out. This week, Indigenous Australian rugby star Latrell Mitchell disclosed that he has encountered a “deluge of abuse” for addressing racism online.
