Dozens of distinguished black Britons, together with Sir Lenny Henry, actor Adrian Lester and Channel four information presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy, printed an open letter describing the judgment as “deeply flawed, illegal and contrary to the spirit and objective of public broadcasting”.
The BBC’s decision to uphold a complaint against a presenter who spoke out on-air in July about controversial remarks made by US President Donald Trump has drawn criticism.
Ms Munchetty responded: “Each time I’ve been informed, as a lady of color, to return to the place I got here from, that was embedded in racism. This is ridiculous. It’s perfectly understandable why she said what she did”. And I imagine a lot of people in this country will be feeling absolutely furious that a man in that position feels it’s OK to skirt the lines with using language like that.
The editorial complaints unit dominated that these phrases have been high-quality, however mentioned Ms Munchetty was improper to go additional.
“She understandably feels strongly on this issue, and there was nothing wrong with her talking about her own experiences of racism”, the BBC said in a statement.
