Online dating challenges for people of colour: ‘Race filters’ and coded compliments

When Aditi and Alex matched on a dating app, she had modest expectations. Three years of using the app had exposed her to countless profiles. Yet, as she entered a south London pub for their initial rendezvous, she discovered Alex’s genuine kindness, which took her by surprise.

Four years down the line, they find themselves engaged and planning their wedding amidst a pandemic. Aditi, hailing from Newcastle, has Indian heritage, while Alex is of white ethnicity. Their journey is exceptional, given the prevalence of ethnicity filters on dating apps and the tendency for people to make dating choices influenced by race.
