Encountering an unfamiliar person’s request for weed or pills is an experience that many individuals of Black ethnicity have encountered, and it is an uncomfortable situation.
Naturally, the likelihood of this occurrence varies depending on the circumstances. It is more common among young people and in environments where drug use is more prevalent, such as festivals, bars, and clubs.
However, irrespective of the situation, the misperception of being a drug dealer is an occurrence that disproportionately affects Black individuals. There is also a gender-related aspect, with Black men being more prone to being perceived in this manner, often attributed to physical characteristics that may lead to them being seen as ‘intimidating’ and ‘criminal.’
