BAFTA acknowledges diversity gap in nominations, calls for industry change

BAFTA officials expressed their dissatisfaction with the all-white acting nominations revealed on Tuesday. They urged the industry to make more substantial and swifter progress in addressing this issue. Additionally, they pledged to take steps to promote gender equality. They informed Variety that the upcoming iteration of their Elevate program will focus on supporting female directors. This decision came in response to the continued absence of women directors from the main category at the 2020 awards

Marc Samuelson, chair of BAFTA’s film committee, expressed his dismay towards the lack of diversity in the acting nominations, telling Variety when asked for his take on this year’s nominations. “It’s just a frustration that the industry is not moving as fast as certainly the whole BAFTA team would like it to be.”
