The Impact of Racism on Employee Mental Health and Wellbeing

The workplace significantly impacts the mental health of employees, and our understanding of this influence is progressing. Many of the UK’s largest companies are now training a record number of mental health first aiders to support their staff. Some employers also grant mental health days, similar to sick leave for physical illnesses.

Conscious efforts are underway to ensure employees have manageable workloads, maintain a healthy work-life balance, and increase awareness of issues like imposter syndrome.

However, one aspect that employers often overlook is the prevalence of racism in the workplace. There is substantial evidence indicating that encounters with discrimination, whether they are subtle or blatant, pose a considerable risk for various psychological conditions, including depression and anxiety.
