Ethnic Minority Victims Ignored: The ‘Missing White Woman Syndrome’

Last Friday, the body of Sabina Nessa, a 28-year-old woman of South Asian heritage from Southeast London, was discovered in a Greenwich park.

While two men have been apprehended and interrogated on suspicion of her murder, the investigation is still underway.

During the same week, the disappearance of a 22-year-old white woman, Gabby Petito, took centre stage in the news, capturing the media’s attention both in the UK and the US.

Her story received extensive coverage on major global news outlets and appeared to engage the public more profoundly than Sabina’s case.
