Setting the standard for Inclusive Teams

A team is only as good as the sum of its parts.

If your teams aren’t communicating effectively, one voice dominates all others, or a small percentage are taking on most of the work – then not only will the individuals within suffer – but also your organisation.

To maximise each team’s innovation, productivity and collaboration, there has to be a culture of psychological safety and respect. Each member of the team must feel able to be themselves and speak up – respectfully – to challenge each other and find the best solutions.

Don’t just follow the leader

It’s not just on your leaders to set an example and expect that people will follow. In reality, your employees all have a role to play in creating an inclusive, productive culture – and understanding why and how will provide the foundations for better communication, collaboration and high-performance.

Pearn Kandola’s Inclusive Teams training ensures everyone is on the same page – without compromising their individuality and diversity. Our course empowers participants to understand their unique inclusion strengths and challenge areas – equipping them with the exact skills they need to improve, and make their team work better, for everyone.

Unlike ineffective off-the-shelf training, our live, interactive and personalised programme delivers lasting behavioural change, and results you can actually measure.

Our inclusive teams training packages

Pearn Kandola’s Inclusive Teams training is powered by our exclusive digital diagnostic tools and centres around an engaging and interactive 3-hour live workshop that covers everything participants need to know to be more inclusive, at work and beyond.

At the beginning of the programme, participants will be invited to access Kandola+ DIORAMA, our proprietary diagnostic tool that will provide a safe space to explore different inclusion situations and give objective and non-judgemental feedback on their ability to act.

This step is vital, as research shows that leaders are more likely to apply learning when they have received personalised feedback.

All sessions are designed and delivered by our qualified business psychologists

During the workshop itself, participants will be introduced to the concept of inclusion and how it applies to the workplace, so they have a real-world* understanding of how their behaviours can impact their decision-making and those around them.

Using the Pearn Kandola QUAD model to take a deeper dive into the behaviours that separate people who are inclusive from those who aren’t, participants will be asked to consider their Kandola+ DIORAMA results throughout the workshop, putting their personal strengths and weaknesses into context.

Sharing experiences via peer group interactions has been shown to help people explore inclusion in more depth – learning from each other about what actions and behaviours they do on a daily basis to make others feel like they are valued and are part of the team – puts learning into context.

From here, they will be motivated and equipped with practical strategies to implement more inclusive behaviours at work.

*We can customise the workshop further by adding business challenges and data from your own organisation for participants to consider and tackle during the programme.

“Working with Jonathan Taylor and the team at Pearn Kandola has been great. They are experts in the area and bring insight to each group, using examples and research to explore each topic. They have been responsive to our requirements, particularly when the pandemic hit and the approach had to shift quickly. Thinking about inclusion during that time of huge pressure and change was particularly important for our leaders and managers.”

Our approach to inclusive teams training

As a firm of business psychologists, our work is rooted in over 40 years of research and evidence-based practice that you can actually measure.

Our inclusive teams workshops focus on three core areas to deliver lasting change:

Insight
Awareness
Action

Insight

Research shows that without examining personal biases, people are unlikely to take action to address them.

Once invited onto the programme, participants will be asked to complete the Kandola+ DIORAMA diagnostic tool, used by thousands of participants to understand their current ability to spot exclusive behaviours and take action against them.

This step is vital for each individual to carry their own personal insights into the next stage of the programme.

Awareness

The awareness stage is highly interactive and engaging and brings together the science of inclusion and real-world business examples for teams to fully understand its importance and impact in the workplace.

This part of the workshop focuses on educating participants and covers the fundamentals such as:

  • The concept of inclusion
  • The Pearn Kandola QUAD framework
  • Real-world business challenges and how inclusion is integral to day-to-day working
  • Understanding what they personally do and don’t do to be inclusive
  • Actions and behaviours they can implement to enhance inter-team relationships and overall performance

Action

Research shows that when people have clear insights into what they, personally, need to do to make change – and have the tools to do so – they are motivated to act.

It’s this stage of the workshop where participants will leverage the personal understanding of their own strengths and challenge areas in order to take action.

Participants will be equipped with practical actions they can take to address their challenge areas and ensure that they are able to spot and effectively tackle exclusive behaviour in the workplace.

Please note that the tools and resources used in this phase will vary depending on your chosen package (see our packages section for more information).

Frequently asked questions

What is an inclusive team?

In an inclusive team, each team member is able to respect and acknowledge each others’ differences and, significantly, communicate and work together in a way that demonstrates this.

This includes recognising personal biases and micro-incivilities in ourselves and others to minimise their impact on our language and decision-making.

Why is inclusion important in teams?

It’s easy to see why inclusive teams will benefit employees and organisations alike.

If we feel able to bring our whole selves to work within a team culture of mutual respect, we will likely have a better sense of well-being and safety in the workplace.

If your teams can communicate inclusively and effectively, they can tackle difficult conversations, overcome conflict and feel able to propose, challenge and cultivate new ideas in order to deliver the most effective solutions.

How can we measure inclusion in our team?

In our proven Inclusive Teams training, we utilise our digital platform, Kandola+, to measure how inclusive participants are.

Based on the action plans they receive to address their challenge areas, we can measure whether there has been an increase in each participant’s inclusive behaviours based on inclusion assessments and feedback from their own colleagues.

More widely, we can also conduct DEI Audits and focus groups to gather feedback and look for success and potential improvement areas.

96% of participants become more inclusive following our inclusive teams programme. That’s a change you can measure.

How can you improve team communication?

You can improve the culture and communication of your teams in several different ways.

In our Inclusive Teams programme, we utilise our proven quad model, underpinned by a methodology scientifically proven to trigger and embed behavioural change.

Read our article ‘Inclusive Team Communication: Bridging Differences Effectively‘ for some quick practical guidance.

How do you create inclusive leaders?

Many organisations run our Inclusive Leader workshops alongside our Inclusive Teams programs, creating a powerful combination for all-around change in your organisation.

Change starts at the top – and this two-way strategy goes deeper, fostering inclusion across every level of your business.
